A downloadable asset pack

109 Visual Novel Backgrounds Pack! Free to use!

These are backgrounds I originally made for my AI-generated interactive Visual Novel which runs 24/7 on Twitch. I realized that the backgrounds that get generated are perfect to use either as placeholders, or as finished backgrounds for a proper visual novel if you just touch them up a bit. I want to share the knowledge with you!

You can easily create quick backgrounds with Midjourney AI! Just give it a prompt on the Midjourney Discord and it generates a picture for you. The free plan lets you generate 20+ backgrounds, which you can enhance later. If you're an artist, try this workflow: generate a background, paint over it to fix details, and you're good to go. If you're not an artist, use AI-generated backgrounds as placeholders to find the right mood, colors, and atmosphere for your scene.

This is the prompt I used: (location-name), inspired by senior environment artist, pixiv, maximalism, (so many plants), soft cute colors, detailed wide shot, Kyoto Animation Studio anime style 4 k, serene illustration --ar 16:9 --niji

I also used this tool on the realcugan-x2-noise0 setting to upscale the generated picture.

---

The resolution of the backgrounds in this archive varies a lot, but these are mostly 1920x1080 images. Each image is a new location.

No license on these backgrounds. Feel free to use them however, wherever. Paint over them and use them as proper backgrounds. Use them in your own twitch streams, use them as backgrounds for your artworks. Don't credit me. Just be honest about them being originally generated by an AI :D Have fun!

(Update: Keep in mind that it's grey zone regarding copyright, and f.e. Steam apparently doesn't allow to ship games with AI-generated assets in them, even if they were slightly modified.)

Thank you so much!!! Going to learn off of these, and hopefully create my first renpy game! Amazing artwork by the way!

AI pictures could be a good source of knowledge in terms of f.e. composition and use of color, but AI still messes up a lot of details or nuances about architecture, furniture and other details, as well as the consistency of lights and shadows, so I definitely don't recommend studying them directly.

If you want to learn creating beautiful anime / visual novel backgrounds, I recommend studying backgrounds of existing animes and visual novels (for me these were Nichijou and Clannad), as well as artists like しおん - https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/14707888 or _LM7_ - https://www.pixiv.net/en/users/420928

For the AI backgrounds in this post, I recommend to exclusively use them as a) draft backgrounds while developing a visual novel to then later replace with actual custom backgrounds; b) as finished assets in context that welcomes AI assets to be used, or c) as basis for rich thorough overpainting to take them as a sort of sketch and transform them into something that doesn't have any of the dumb AI artifacts and visual glitches and actually shows your own unique artstyle.

Thanks for the info! I'm going to use manga/anime background references to create scenes, and maybe some ai generated art ( which I'll make sure to modify to make crisp, or just use as a reference! ) Thanks again!

Hello! Looks like on itch  started to crystallize "ai-generated" tag so I recommend you to add it to all your AI packs...

It didn't show up in the dropdown list, and I also generally can't find that tag on itch.io... But I did add a tag exactly the way you wrote, plus the "artificial-intelligence" one, good call, thanks!

Only suggested tags appears in drop-down list. I tried to find "artificial-intelligence" tag but I couldn't do it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. the ""artificial-intelligence" is suggested so use it...
